I'll start with Tony Levin. Maybe not the greatest, but not too bad.

Erm, Stve Cropper ia a guitarist. His bestest mate, Duck Dunn, was a great bass-player.

GingerNut 11:18 Mon Sep 24 Re: Greatest Bassist Geddy Lee.
Even after all these years, I still marvel at the middle instrumental section of Freewill, where all three of them go off on individual, crazy tangents before it all seamlessly snaps back into sync again.
It's not just the playing of it, it's writing it in the first place that blows my mind.
*Not worthy*

Geezer Butler And the bass player who played with Elvis Costello in the early years
Duno who they are but all those big double bassists who lug their gear around and don't plug it in. Probably hate modern bass playing.

Geddy Lee. Whatever you might think about Rush's music, he is undeniably an absolute virtuoso, although there was not much evidence of that until Hemispheres, 6 albums in.
Gary Strater, RIP. Sublime on Fountains of Light.
Klaus-Peter Matziol. Check out Ocean II by Eloy.
Just my opinion.

I think a shout here too for Bernard Edwards especially for the bass on Chic's Good Times.
The most sampled bassline ever?
